Canterbury is poised for what will be a short-lived burst of fine weather today, while the West Coast is bracing for heavy downpours.

MetService has forecast a high of 12 degrees Celsius for Christchurch today with high cloud increasing with northwesterly winds.

But showers are expected to kick in tomorrow, with another fine day forecast for Wednesday before a low hovers over the region until Monday next week, bringing heavy rain at times.

A severe weather watch has been issued for Westland and Fiordland until early this morning with a burst of heavy rain expected.

Residents in the area are advised to stay up to date with the latest forecasts in case this watch needs to be upgraded to a full warning.
