Looking for the best weather these school holidays? Probably best to head for the South Island.
Gales and heavy rain are lashing the top of the North Island today and are expected to spread over the rest of the island over the next two days.
On this side of Cook Strait the weather will deteriorate from Wednesday and get much colder by the end of the week, before a predicted fine and frosty weekend and a sunny start to the second week of the holidays.
Unfortunately for North Islanders another storm system could well be heading their way to wreck outdoor activities early next week too.
The deep low pressure areas forming in the northern Tasman Sea and north of the country are typical of the curent La Nina weather pattern.
