A bitter southerly blast is lining up to unleash all sorts of weather action across Canterbury over the next 36 hours.
Thunderstorms, rain, hail, sleet and snow are on the cards as one of the coldest outbreaks of the winter pushes north.
Make the most of the generally fine and mild weather, as the first south-westerly change later this afternoon is expected to bring colder temperatures and showers and may even trigger a few thunderstorms by early evening, accompanied by hail.
Conditions should clear tonight before the main polar blast rattles up the Canterbury coast tomorrow morning, bringing wintry showers and snow as low as 200m.
Further squally thunderstorms are possible tomorrow afternoon with gusty winds, hail and snow to low levels.
Conditions should quickly clear by Saturday morning to a mostly sunny day, though the cold blustery winds may take a while to die out.
In complete contrast, strong, warm north-westerly winds are likely on Sunday and could rise to gale or severe-gale force in inland Canterbury.

sorry guys it will be very short lived ! cold but not cold enough to snow in christchurch ... Still a chance we might get a decent fall but will have to arrive in next 2wks. Dissapointing as a big fall of snow is so xciting ! o well
..another HUGE forecast ..I wonder if THIS one will turn right at Ashburton and fizzle out ? I hope not..a darn good storm would be great.
I hope it snows tomorrow we've been without a decent fall in some time. I wonder if the system will allow it. Be cold anyway good day for soup and toast.
".......Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow..." About time we had another big snow in Christchurch.
