Christchurch residents were treated to a double rainbow and a spectacular sunset last night.

Press reader Sammy Zhu thought the skies looked "beautiful" and took these photographs from Styx Mill Reserve, while Steve Tellurian captured a rare double rainbow.

MetService is expecting a southerly change will move up the east coast of the South Island today, bringing a few showers.

The rain in the west will slowly ease back to just showers.

Christchurch can expect a high of 19 degrees Celsius and an overnight low of 8.

Rain could develop into snow showers on Lindis, Lewis and Porters Pass.
