The weather gods look to be smiling on Christchurch, with rain holding off for Cup Week's big events.

Skies Weather forecaster Tony Trewinnard said the sun will make an appearance at Tuesday's Cup Day and Friday's Royal visit to the A&P Show.

However, he advised keeping an umbrella and a sun hat handy as the ''changeable'' weather could switch considerably from morning to afternoon.

Tuesday should be ''reasonably fine, with some sunshine and a nor-east breeze'' he said.

''The temperature will just sneak into the mid-teens.''Friday will host ''traditional show day weather'' with sunshine and temperatures heating up by late afternoon.

MetService forecaster Brooke Lockhart said Tuesday's Cup Day at Addington is looking to be the ''best day'' of the week, although advised packing a blazer to combat cool temperatures.

''It looks like there might be the odd shower earlier in the morning,'' she said.

''There will be fine spells the rest of the day.''

Trewinnard predicted frost on Monday night early Tuesday morning.

Cloud is likely to roll in Wednesday, with brief showers in the evening and Thursday will be cloudy and cool with southwest winds, he said.
