Residents in Christchurch have spotted an unusual occurence in the sky today - a halo around the sun.

The halo, is an optical phenomenon, produced by ice crystals that create arcs in the sky, which encircle the sun or moon.

Many Press readers sent in photographs of today's halo, as featured in our gallery above.

In folklore, the halo is said to herald the arrival of heavy rain.

MetService is predicting fine weather for the rest of the day and for Monday, with a chance of some rain in Christchurch on Tuesday.
