LATEST: Temperatures have reached 32 degrees Celsius in Christchurch today.

A MetService spokeswoman said temperature at some stations hit 32.3C this afternoon, while others showed 31.2C.

"It's different all over the city, but it's very hot everywhere," she said.

The hot weather follows a run of high-temperature days, with the mercury hitting more than 26C over the weekend.

Beaches were packed as thousands made the most of an idyllic run of weather from Friday to Sunday.

However, the sunny spell of weather is supposed to end tomorrow.

MetService predicted a high of 21C, with morning rain and cloud.

In a longer range forecast, Christmas Day is looking to be a "nice and fairly usual summers day", according to a forecaster.

Blue Skies meteorologist Tony Trewinnard said some low cloud was expected at first on december 25, breaking with sunshine during the day and a typical northeasterly breeze.

Temperatures were likely to be around the 20C mark.
