MetService has issued a thunderstorm warning for the top half of the South Island.

The storm could bring downpours and flash floods.

The Canterbury high country, Marlborough, Nelson and Buller are on alert for heavy showers and thunderstorms to develop this afternoon. 

Downpours of 25 to 40 millimetres an hour are possible, especially around the ranges inland from Nelson.

The severe rainfall could cause flash flooding, especially around low-lying areas, and may also lead to slips, MetService said.

Drivers are urged to be cautious as conditions could be hazardous, with poor visibility and flooding.

The thunderstorms are expected to ease tonight.
