MetService forecasters are closely watching developing thunderstorms across parts of Canterbury that could bring severe weather to Christchurch, the Canterbury Plains and parts of the high country this afternoon.

Spokesman Dan Corbett said the cluster of storms building inland from Timaru could become severe this afternoon.

Severe storms could develop elsewhere across the plains, accompanied by hail larger than 20 millimetres in diameter.

Such big hailstones could cause significant damage to crops, orchards, vines, glasshouses and vehicles, as well as make driving conditions hazardous.

Corbett said the storms should  ease from late this afternoon.
