Heavy rain could fall in Canterbury and Westland today, the MetService has warned.
A severe weather watch issued just after 9am said a deep low was moving over the lower South Island.
"An unsettled strong west to northwest flow over the country, bringing rain to western New Zealand and gale westerlies to the lower North Island, is expected to ease tonight as the low moves away to the east of the South Island," the advisory said.
A warning for heavy rain is in place for the ranges of Westland and Buller, and for the Canterbury headwaters.
