Heavy rain and gale force winds are expected to bash parts of the country tomorrow.

MetService forecast the heaviest of the rain for western parts of the South Island, part of the Canterbury headwaters, and the northwest Nelson Ranges.

The rain was being brought by a strong moist northerly flow ahead of a low expected to cross the country tomorrow.

Northerly winds were expected to rise to gale about exposed parts of the South Island.

They could become severe - above 89kmh -  for a while about exposed parts of Fiordland, Westland, Otago, the Canterbury high country, and Marlborough.
