Keeping track of progress

Last updated 14:40 27/11/2009

clipboardI noticed earlier this week that after playing Assassin's Creed 2 for a staggering 21 hours and 36 minutes, I had only completed 60 per cent of the main storyline. Talk about giving you value for money. I had no idea I'd been playing it for that long, that's how enjoyable the game is.

I'm loving that so many games now are including stats counters in them so you can check out all the interesting things that you've been up to and achieved: at that 21-hour point I'd assassinated 142 enemies with my hidden blades (my favourite weapon, apparently), and of those assassinations, 11 had been air assassinations and four took down two enemies at once.

I'd climbed a total of 8837m, swum 2917m, ridden more than 10,000m on horseback and flown just over 775m using Leonardo da Vinci's flying machine. I'd also hired the game's ladies of the night - the courtesans - a total of, ahem, 25 times. Purely to distract enemy guards, you understand.

I think adding stats to a game gives a gamer more ownership of a game and it means that you see just how far you've progressed or what skills you've learnt. I find it a great motivator. I found the stats information in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves incredibly useful as well.

Do you like checking out how well you're progressing using in-game stats?

I'm off to Auckland for the weekend with Mrs Game Junkie so there will be no gaming for me this weekend (apart, perhaps, from some Bejewelled 2 on my iPod or LittleBigPlanet on my PSP during the plane flight) but how about you? What game are you planing to finish up, keep working on or perhaps start?

I'm going to be all over Uncharted 2 as I attempt to find the last remaining 20 or so treasures, and get the last few remaining trophies so I can get platinum.

I may also have to crack open Bioshock again so I can complete that before Bioshock 2 arrives on Feb 9. Got the pre-order notification from Mighty Ape yesterday, and noting it was due for release the day after my birthday, I figured I'd order it to save my wife the hassle of figuring out what to get me next year (what can I say? I'm good like that ;-)). I ordered the Rapture edition, which comes with an art book, Little Sister figurine and t-shirt. Not quite as special as the Special Edition, but a cut above the standard version :-)

I'm a stats fiend as well. One area in which I think stat tacking is done very well (and I'm surprised more games haven't copied and done similar things) is Halo 3's multiplayer. The Bungie.net component has a tonne of interesting stats from your multiplayer exploits - not to mention the fact that you can actually record and share your proudest moments :)

stats are good. but can be depressing at the same time. showing how much of your life has been sucked away by a game.

I like how Dragon Age actually uses stats like this on a lot of the loading screens... so you can see which party member is contributing most of the damage, how many darkspawn you've killed, it definitely makes the load times a lot more manageable.

The NPC dialogue is great too - the way they interject themselves into conversations and occasionally bicker with each other is a real highlight of the game.

I'm about 20 hours in and I suspect I'm less than halfway through the main story - hopefully I'll be a bit further by the end of this weekend! I'm holding off starting Assassins Creed II until I've finished a first playthrough.

Saints Row 1 and 2 had a number of stats that were *ahem* interesting like the number of pedestrains killed, mugged, distance travelled on foot, bike, car, plane, boat, helicopter as wellas the obligatory hours played. The original had an achievement at 20 hours called addicted to the row and the sequel had one that kicked in at 50 hours.

I think I've spent almost 100 hours playing that game and if you haven't played it, get it. Forget the easy comparisons to GTA and play the game because it has a sense of humour. Even after the hours I've played there are still so many easter eggs, random lines from pedestrians and bizarre things that just happen.

I love looking at Stats. Every now and again before I exit a session I'll check out my stats.

A few times in Assassin's Creed II I've accidentally assassinated an innocent bystander instead of pickpocketing them (holding down the wrong button). Made me feel a bit 'special' but it was hilarious nonetheless. I'm glad it doesn't keep count of that!

Ditto to m0rph3us comments about Dragonage load screens. Also comes with story updates too which I thought was a great idea. I am just hitting forty hours and think I am not far from the final fights. Already planning my next character for when I clock it and start again. I have mainly followed the main storyline so next time through will pick-up more of the side quests and, of course, change the way I resolved the main quests.

@m0rph3us and Noddy Senior. This may sound lame but how do you get character stats to appear on the load screen? Mine only shows story hints. Is this perhaps a difference in platforms or just a setting I have missed?

I do enjoy seeing how effective my different characters are at similar points in games.

I also find that sometimes stats can give too much away though. Like 0% of X nasty critter killed. Well...thanks for spoiling that surprise.
