Watch where you stand ...

battlefieldbadcompany2In Battlefield Bad Company 2 you can blow things up. Big things, like buildings and forests.

And in BFBC2 you can never guarantee that the building you are seeking cover behind will actually be standing in a few moments' time thanks to some smartly placed shells from an M1 Abrams tank. This isn't the first game to do destructible terrain but I reckon it's one of the only games that gets it right. In this game, destructible terrain can actually change the shape of the battlefield - mid-combat.

One minute you're bunkered down in a house, RPG at the ready for the approaching tank, then the next your ears are ringing and you're showered by fragments of brick and mortar, and there's now a large gaping hole where your right shoulder was leaning. You start to feel vulnerable very quickly.

Like no other multiplayer game before it, I'm hooked on the online side of Battlefield Bad Company 2 (in fact, I started playing the online game before I launched into the single player), and although I haven't had time to play any for the past week, I'm determined to get stuck back into it this week, play in a squad with some friends and rank up.

I played the multiplayer beta as a sniper but soon decided that wasn't the class for me: it's not much fun being a sniper who is continually sniped yourself. Now, I'm playing as the engineer class and loving it. There's even an achievement as an engineer if you can do a headshot with the repair tool!

I've finished the single player and while it was enjoyable in parts it didn't impress the pants off me. BFBC2 is a game where multiplayer is king and the single player is an added bonus. Besides, who buys a Battlefield game for the single player campaign? BFBC2's destructible buildings add a new dimension to the game. They make it even more fun.

So, what other games can you recall playing that had game-changing elements that made you return to them time and time again?

I'm currently part way through the single player. Which I am basically only playing because the server browser is so woeful for me. Does anyone know if the issues with it are going to be patched any time soon?

"..it didn't impress the pants off me. "

You need to wear looser pants then. I loved the single player campaign on this game. Multiplayer is always where it's at though.

The Unoffocial BF1942 Modern Warfare Mod Patch that came out way back in the day completely changed my online gaming world.

Matt the issues should have been fixed now.. but what platform you on?

Loving the BFBC2 -A LOT- right now.

Oh and "The Dentist" achievement you speak of Gerard was selected by the community..

I have hardly touched single player because multiplayer is so much fun! There is something very satisfying about getting a quad kill via a Anti-Tank Mine as a LAV runs over it.

I'm planning to pick up BFBC2 soon - seems that everyone is talking about it.

Interested to hear about the destructible buildings etc. Destroying buildings was basically the highlight of Red Faction: Guerilla but it was generally just destroying them for the sake of it - it wasn't that often that you would strategically destroy a building to take down enemies. Having said that, planting a whole lot of charges and then standing back and... boom! was still pretty satisfying.

Has to be GTA 3,And BF1942.. sandbox changed so much, not the same old turn left guy with a gun turn right two guys with guns etc. Plus flying a spitfire over the deserts massive maps..sweet.

Medic and sniper is for me, the ranking system pays off, I have noticed lag in the last couple of games though. Its good to see a reviewer that gets the Frostbite tech that makes BFBC2 a great game, try playing another FPS without it now. Dull. Shame you dont have it on the PS3 Gerald im sick of playing with Americas..I saw kiwi madman last night online of that any of you guys ?

I love the engineer class. If I pick up BFBC2 that's what I'll probably play as, if not a medic. Maybe defib some sneaky ninjas or something. ;)

Only thing I hate about the destructible terrain is when you're all ready to defend an objective from incoming infantry; no bomb's gonna get planted while you're on watch! All of a sudden, the building collapses in its entirety from a stray (or perhaps well-placed) tank shell that destroys the objective. I don't mind the objective falling, but when it INSTANTLY happens with no prior warning or even SIGHT of the enemy.... yeah, frustrations abound.

I thought the sp campaign was awesome for a battlefield game, maybe not as good as COD4 MW2 but still pretty dam for a game that I wasn't expecting to have any single player mode at all!

I haven't actually played enough multiplayer yet, dam thing seems a bit bugged still, random disconnects and the server browser doesn't show latency, which it makes it hard finding a decent server! :|

Matt, being that EA run the servers I wouldn't be holding my breath on it ever being fixed. BFBC1 had horrible servers and it was never fixed.

I get sick of emptying an entire clip into the back of someones head only for them to turn around and knife me from the otherside of the room. The lag is crap and the fact the store stil isn't fixed is a joke.
