I didn't think much of the last Transformers game - the appalling Dark of the Moon movie tie-in - or of War for Cybertron for that matter, so it was with a fair amount of trepidation that I plopped Transformers: Fall of Cybertron into my PlayStation 3 last night. I needn't have worried: it's a much better game than those two.
Fall of Cybertron deals with the battle between the Autobots and Decepticons as they battle for dominance on their home planet of Cybertron. The game deals with the final battle that sees the planet destroyed and the machines forced to find a new home world.
The game opens with Optimus Prime and his Autobot chums leaving Cybertron on a vessel called the Ark but they're ambushed by Megatron and you jump into the shoes of Bumblebee. He eventually comes across Optimus and Megatron in battle and just as the Decepticon leader delivers his killing blow, Bumblebee blocks the shot. The game then flashes back to six days before the destruction of Cybertron.
While I'm not a diehard Transformers fan, it seems that Fall of Cybertron is a love letter to fans of the mechanised robots and a far cry from the Transformers presented by director Michael Bay in his movies. Longtime fans will also be pleased to know that dinobot Grimlock is a playable Autobot, but I understand it's not for long.
I'm not far through yet so can't pass judgment on whether it remains true to its source material - there have been plenty of explosions, lots of levers to pull and Decepticons to kill so far - but it has to be better than Dark of the Moon, right?
So, that was the sum total of my gaming this weekend: the weather was too nice. What have you been playing lately? Something fresh and new - or a tried-and-true favourite?

...Casual gamer.
Started out on my Charr Engineer in Guild Wars 2, logged on with some trepidation after experiencing the debacle that was the Diablo 3 launch but was very pleasantly surprised. No hassles getting on the servers, played through til midnight without a hitch, Blizzard could learn a thing or 20.
The game is fun too, looking forward to seeing how it pans out at higher levels but so far so good.
I've heard nothing but great things about Fall of Cybertron and it has Dinobots, so I think I'm going to have to get it!
I'm playing New Super Mario Bros 2 on my 3DS at the moment. Way better then I was expecting and the perfect pick up and play companion at work.
After almost 10 years away, I made my way back to Counter Strike this weekend.
Addictive thing - cant believe people still play it but hey im not complaining.
transformers FoC is an awesome game, great game play and really good story line BUT there isnt much with the dinobots but great game recommended it
Been doing some good old Thief 2: The Metal Age. My mate got me back into some Diablo 3 after the latest patch. Its still a complete waste of time though. But still somehow fun. I have Guild Wars 2 on pre order. I get to pick it up tomorrow. But I don't really want it. Not sure if i should get it just to be polite after EB going to the trouble of ordering it for me or what?
Just picked this up, but a part of me wants to just put it on my shelf and play dark souls again. I cant get enough of that game

When I purchased my PS3 I bought "Transformers Dark of the moon" (Movie based game), because I heard War for Cybertron was great. That game turned out to be not so good, as they were rushed to release it.
However,
Fall of Cybertron is great, super good gameplay, and super intense at times. The port for the PS3 is very bad, compared to the Xbox version. I just hope they release a patch to fix, in the meantime.... just rent it.
Nothing new here for me, Gears+beers, Rockband3..

I started Darksiders 2, which arrived while I was away on holiday. Loved the first one, and so far I'm really enjoying the sequel. It's great to play such a fun game in a genuinely unique and original setting.
Interesting to hear your thoughts on Transformers, Gerard. I didn't pre-order as I've been somewhat disappointed with the Transformers games to date. Maybe this one will be worth picking up though.
