First five Jarred Percival scored all of his team's points as High School Old Boys reclaimed the Hawkins Trophy Canterbury Metro club rugby title this afternoon.

High School Old Boys beat Sydenham 14-5 in a tough, defensive struggle at Rugby Park to win their seventh final since 2001.

They had plenty of motivation heading into the final after slipping up to New Brighton in last year's decider.

HSOB's only try of the game came in the 24th minute when Percival did well to regather the ball from a Johnny Legg box kick and dash away to score.

Legg spotted a disorganised Sydenham back three and timed his kick beautifully for Percival to scoop up the ball close to the ground.

Down 11-0 just prior to halftime, Sydenham hit back when hooker Paul Ngauamo barged over from a penalty tap close to the line.

High School Old Boys controlled territory for much of the second half, but Sydenham finished the game strongly.

They had several promising opportunities down in the HSOB 22 during the last 10 minutes. Through a mixture of some outstanding HSOB defence and their own handling errors, Sydenham were unable to strike.

HSOB midfielder Rob Thompson had an excellent game on both attack and defence and was deservedly named player of the match.

High School Old Boys 14 (Jarred Percival try; three penalties) Sydenham 5 (Paul Ngauamo try). HT: HSOB 11-5
