Belfast 1 takes lead in section one

With a 6-3 win over Rangiora 1, Belfast 1 took over the lead in section one of the Bowls Canterbury premier sevens on Saturday.
Darren Redway (Rangiora) continued his good form in singles with another excellent win, this time at the expense of fellow Canterbury representative Glen McDonald (Belfast) 31-20.
The pairs and fours were shared with Adrian Robins (Belfast) winning early over Trevor Skerten 30-19 and Noel Alexander's four from Rangiora losing by three to Belfast's Peter McLean's four 20-23.
Canterbury 1 moved up the leaderboard with a 9-0 win over Allenton to be just three points behind Belfast on 18 with Sumner, who were beaten in the singles and pairs, to gain only three points from the round after leading the competition the previous round.
A feature of the round was Allenton's Rod Greaney's singles with Andrew Kelly (Canterbury) with Greaney finally succumbing 30-31.
In division one, section two, Riccarton Racecourse continues to set the pace on 21 points, despite winning only the singles in their game with Bowls Papanui with Paul Matheson (Riccarton Racecourse) again winning his game, this time 31-23 over the veteran Brian McGowan to remain unbeaten after four rounds. Three teams make up second place on 15 points – Papanui Club, Redcliffs and Bowls Papanui.
A notable result was Parklands beating Redcliffs 6-3 with the singles game between John Foggo (Parklands) and Robbie Reed (Redcliffs) turning out to be a cliffhanger. Foggo was well ahead for most of the match leading 14-0, then 24-11, and then down 29-30 to Reed. Foggo finally prevailed 31-30 after getting two shots for the win.
Three teams lead in division one of the three fours competition played on Saturday. In a topsy-turvy round, Burnside 1, who led the competition last week, now share the lead with Beckenham 1 and Canterbury on 27 points. Two skips remain unbeaten with three wins – Maurice Symes, of Canterbury, and Ray Hunt's team, of Beckenham.
