Christchurch logged a last-minute victory over Burnside in the second round of the fight for the metropolitan division-one trophy at Rugby Park on Saturday.

A haul of 22 points by dead-eye Christchurch first five-eighth Jason Merrett contributed largely to the win.

Burnside enjoyed the better start, with 14 points in as many minutes, and deserved their nine-point lead at halftime.

Merrett's kicking, along with an outstanding performance from Gary Redmond in his 50th match, proved the difference in the second half, as the patient Christchurch began to exert control on the match.

The sinbinning of Burnside lock Rob McGregor was heavily punished by Christchurch, who piled on 17 points in his absence.

Merrett delivered the knockout penalty goal in the final minutes to sink Burnside 32-30.

Linwood and Sydenham were closely matched at Sydenham Park until two second-half tries sealed the visitors' 20-16 victory.

High School Old Boys have booked a spot in the plate final after fighting off a late surge from University at Bob Deans Fields.

A solid forward display was the key to Old Boys' 26-21 victory, although University produced three late tries to add some respect to the scoreline.

Former All Blacks halfback Justin Marshall was on hand to guide Sumner to an important win at home over New Brighton, 25-17. Sumner is now assured a place alongside High School Old Boys in the plate final.

Belfast are poised to have a crack at the bowl final in two weeks after dispatching Lincoln University 22-7. Sonny Bill Williams crossed for his first try in the Belfast colours and displayed a strong defensive effort and genuine creativity.

Marist-Albion racked up five tries in their 37-24 win over Shirley at Burwood Park. The scoreline included a try for Marist-Albion's Chris Crichton, who has crossed the line in his last eight matches.
