Night-time Pippa call a shoulder pain
A royal query and a clumsy fight with a phone in bed have left Robyn Judkins nursing a dislocated right shoulder.
Judkins, renowned for his penchant for standing on the Sumner Beach finishing line welcoming finishers following the Coast to Coast race, may have to curtail his exuberance when shaking hands with competitors next weekend.
The saga began benignly enough for the Coast to Coast creator.
When Judkins' phone rang last week he rolled over in his bed, picked up the receiver and fielded a query about the chances of Pippa Middleton, the younger sister of the Duchess of Cambridge, competing in the gruelling multisport race.
"I got a call from the royal correspondent of the Daily Mail who wanted to know if Pippa was coming and whether they should send someone or just use a stringer from Christchurch," Judkins recalled.
"I said I didn't know but I would be in touch.
"I was lying in bed and went to replace the phone on the receiver and I dislocated my right shoulder as I passed my hand over my body."
Judkins now has his arm in a sling and although he can still shake hands he has to be cautious.
"That's the sixth time I have dislocated it but the first time I have done it in bed.
"The previous five have been the result of high-speed, impact falls."
Middleton's name was missing from the race lineups last month.
But race organisers didn't rule out the chance of her entering under another name.
