A valiant effort by Canterbury came to nought when they missed making the semifinals of the national inter-provincial golf tournament by the narrowest of margins at North Shore yesterday.
Canterbury won both their matches on the final day of section play downing lowly Poverty Bay-East Coast 4-1 before toppling the home side North Harbour 3-2.
That lifted it to four wins and, after Otago was surprisingly beaten 4-1 by Tasman in the morning round and another front-runner Manawatu-Wanganui also lost, the red and black hopes were raised.
However the combined side squared with Tasman in their final round while Otago downed Northland 4-1 to sneak past Canterbury on a countback of games.
All three teams had four wins but Canterbury's 16 individual victories was marginally inferior to Otago's 17 while Manawatu-Wanganui qualified top with 19.
That means the top qualifier from section one Bay of Plenty plays Otago while Manawatu-Wanganui meets Wellington in this morning's other semifinal.
Canterbury had a tremendous tournament from N0. 1 Jordan Bakkermans who continued on his winning way with another two wins yesterday, both by wide margins, leaving him unbeaten for the week.
However on the flipside No.2, teenager Jason Yoo lost all his matches and was omitted for the final round with reserve Daniel Laughton coming in.
