Lydia Ko has hit a cracking five-under-par last nine holes after a disappointing two-over-par first nine at the New Zealand Women's golf open at Clearwater in Christchurch.

Ko is tied for second, one shot of the lead after the first of three rounds in the tournament.

She chipped in from the front of the green on the last hole, to the roaring approval of the crowd at the Clearwater course.

SWINGING INTO GEAR: Lydia Ko at Thursday's Pro-Am tournament at Clearwater.

The 16-year-old golfing phenomenon is a raging-hot favourite to defend the title. She was a 15-year-old amateur last year, paying just $3 at the TAB.

That's the sort of money Tiger Woods was paying to win majors during his heyday.

Ko, the world No 4 and in her first season as a fully fledged professional, tees off at 8.05am on the 10th tee, alongside Australian Stacey Keating and England's rising star, Charley Hull.
