Uni in club rugby's top six
Last year's beaten finalists University played themselves into Christchurch's premier club rugby competition's all important top six today.
Their first four-try bonus point of the season helped them leap from eighth to sixth with two rounds to go before the 12-team competition splits to its top six and bottom six format.
University thumped Sumner 38-8 at Ilam Park to secure the only four-try bonus point of a tight, low scoring round.
While the students will be enjoying their foray into the top half of the ladder, home losses for both Christchurch and Lincoln University leave them on the outer looking in.
Christchurch were beaten 23-9 by Burnside while Lincoln University scored late, but still went down 22-19 to Sydenham.
New Brighton consolidated their spot in the top six with a hard-fought 18-15 win over Linwood at Linfield while Shirley beat Belfast by the same scoreline at Shirley.
Marist Albion will be looking over their shoulder in the remaining two weeks as their 28-5 loss to High School Old Boys leaves them in fourth, but just four points ahead of seventh placed Christchurch.
Points after nine of 11 rounds: Burnside 35, Sydenham 33, HSOB 31, Marist Albion 26, New Brighton 25, University 23, Christchurch 22, Lincoln University 20, Linwood 15, Shirley 13, Belfast 11, Sumner 5.
In Division II, New Brighton beat High School Old Boys 24-7, Shirley beat Belfast 36-24, Lyttelton beat Marist Albion 34-0, Burnside beat Sumner 25-18, Suburbs beat Christchurch 22-17 and Lincoln University thumped Sydenham 72-8.
