Daniel Vettori has only a 10 per cent chance of being fit for New Zealand's upcoming test and Twenty20 tour of India.

The left-arm spinner was withdrawn from the Black Caps' second test against the West Indies at Jamaica, which finished this morning, due to a right adductor strain and flew home.

Now the former New Zealand captain, and taker of 360 test wickets, looks a remote chance of flying to India with the side later this month.

The first of the two tests, at Hyderabad, begins on August 23 and skipper Ross Taylor indicated this morning that it would probably be too soon for Vettori.

''He's a 90 per cent chance that he won't be there, so we've got to look forward to seeing how the next spinner gets on over there,'' Taylor said from Jamaica, following the team's five-wicket loss to the West Indies.

Taylor didn't confirm that his Central Districts team-mate Tarun Nethula was that ''next spinner'', with the team to travel to India still to be named. But he rejected any notion that Vettori was a spent force at test level.

Despite being New Zealand's second-most prolific wicket-taker at test level, behind Richard Hadlee (431), Vettori has not snared too many big bags of late.

Taylor, though, said the left-arm spinner remained an integral part of the team and he was not concerned by his bowling form.

Vettori retired from international Twenty20 cricket last year, in an effort to prolong his test career, but has made himself available for the upcoming Twenty20 world cup in Sri Lanka.

New Zealand play two T20s in India, on September 9 and 11, before beginning their world cup campaign with a clash against Bangladesh at Pallekele on September 21.
