Monty Panesar has bowled England to the brink of a series-levelling victory against India in the second cricket test, in Mumbai.

The left-arm spinner has ripped through India's top and middle order in the final session of the third day, as England snared seven wickets to leave India in a perilous position.

The hosts are 117-7 in their second innings and hold an overall lead of just 31 runs after Panesar collected his second five-wicket haul of the match.

Having finished the first innings with 5-129, Panesar, who has been out of the test side in recent years with offspinner Graeme Swann having been so successful, again tormented India and has taken 5-61 from 16 overs in the second innings after opening the bowling.

Swann has been the perfect foil, taking 4-70 in India's first dig of 327 and 2-39 in the second innings.

Only opener Gautam Gambhir (53 not out) and No 8 Ravi Ashwin (11) have reached double figures in India's second innings.

Earlier on the third day, England were dismissed in their first innings for 413, giving them an 86-run advantage.

Kevin Pietersen top-scored with 186 while captain Alastair Cook made 122, the pair putting on 206 runs for the third wicket.

India won the first test in Ahmedabad by nine wickets.
