Snappy app: Into the Dead
This is a different direction from Wellington-based iOS developer Pik Pok.
Most of its previous games have been bright, colourful and cheery, but not this one; it's the complete opposite. It is a survival horror that has the living undead in it.
A first-person viewpoint running game set in a zombie apocalypse, Into The Dead sees the player having to run for as long as they can, as fast as they can, through a variety of locales avoiding the undead and a variety of obstacles along the way. It's a similar premise to games like Canabalt and Jetpack Joyride, where you see how far you can go before you die. While Into The Dead's early moment feature a hanful of zombies as you progress levels become crowded and test your skills.
As if shambling zombies weren't enough, the player also has to avoid environmental obstacles and pick up weapons (handguns, automatic weapons, a chainsaw), which help clear a path in your quest to see how long you can run. You gain coins with each successful run, which can be used to buy better items, and you can also buy upgrades using real-world money - but if you're prepared to put in the time you shouldn't need to spend any real money on anything.
Into The Dead has a real The Walking Dead feel to it and is amazingly atmospheric, with its shadowy zombies and minimalist use of sound.
You can either use tilt controls to move the player left and right, or more traditional virtual thumbsticks. Well worth a look if you're a fan of zombie horror fare, plus it's free.
