A magnitude 5.7 earthquake has struck Oaxaca, Mexico, according to the US Geological Survey.

The epicentre of the quake was located 23km southeast of the town of Miahuatlan in Oaxaca, Mexico at a depth of 35km and took place at 1.47pm New Zealand time.

The USGS initially reported it as a 5.9 magnitude quake.

Quakes of magnitude 5 and above are considered moderate and capable of causing considerable damage.

A 5.3-magnitude earthquake also hit 100km north of Tonga at 2pm NZT on Tuesday afternoon at a depth of 10km.

There were no reports of damage or injuries from either quake.
