Two Chinese women were in for a "Valentines Day surprise" after an airline sent them to a 50 Shades of Grey-themed hotel room when their flight was cancelled.

The pair were travelling on a Hainan Airlines flight from Chongqing to Hangzhou on Sunday when their plane was grounded due to bad weather, the South China Morning Post reported.

When they arrived at the hotel the airline had arranged for them, they were shocked to discover they had been booked into a couple's suite, complete with a dominatrix-style "sex chair" with handcuffs, and a circular bed.

One of the bemused women shared photos of the raunchy room on Chinese microblogging site Weibo, describing the experience as "a little Valentines Day surprise for two single unmarried girls".

A Hainan Airlines spokesman apologised for the gaffe, telling it had been difficult to find available rooms when organising the last-minute accommodation for its passengers.

Staff had not checked the interior design of the hotel room before making the reservation, he said.
