Two passengers were lucky to walk away from a dramatic plane crash in Brazil where the aircraft stopped just metres before a main highway, narrowly avoiding a deadly pile-up.

The pilot however, is in a critical condition.

A Sao Paulo security camera caught the final moments on tape, showing the Cessna Citation CJ3 aircraft career down a hill after overshooting it's runway and bounce almost clear over a wall separating the airfield from a major road.

The plane eventually came to rest on the wall and one of the passengers can be seen running from the wreckage.

While the pilot is said to have suffered serious injuries to his brain and spine, both passengers remained largely unscathed except for some minor cuts and bruises.

The plane was attempting to land at Sao Paulo's Congonhas airport when it apparently failed to brake on the runway and overshot it at high speed.

The cause of the crash is still being investigated.
