A Sydney man has been charged with grooming a 13-year-old family friend living in New Zealand.

It is alleged that in May and June this year, the 40-year-old man had sexually explicit conversations with the girl by mobile phone and on social networking sites.

Police say the man sent the girl explicit images and videos, and that he knew how young she was because she was the daughter of a family friend.

The matter was forwarded by New Zealand Police to the NSW Police Child Exploitation Internet Unit for investigation.

Detectives arrested the 40-year-old man at his home in Dulwich Hill, Sydney, today.

He has been charged with using a carriage service to groom a person under 16 years, using a carriage service to transmit indecent communication to a person under 16 years and using a carriage service for child pornography material.

The man is on conditional bail and due to appear at Newtown Local Court on December 4.
