Two Tongan police officers have been charged with manslaughter after a 21-year-old died following an alleged fight at a party, local news reports say.

The charges come three months after a South Auckland Constable Kali Fungavaka died in hospital after he was allegedly assaulted while in custody at the Nuku'alofa central police station

Police Commissioner Grant O'Fee said three off-duty police officers argued with the victim at the party, Matangi Tonga Online reported.

Two male police constables in their 20's were remanded to appear at the Nuku'alofa Magistrate's Court, on Monday November 19.

"This is not what we need at all, and my only message to the public is that we would continue to treat police officers like anyone else," O'Fee told the Tongan news site.

"And if police officers offend they are subject to the same law as everyone else."

Police had launched an investigation into the incident.

Tongan police officers were also charged with manslaughter after Fungavaka's death on August 17.

He was in the country for a family funeral and had been arrested for public drunkenness and allegedly assaulted in custody.

The charged officers are on bail until a court hearing.
