A baby girl is lucky to be alive after being rescued by her mother moments before drowning in a toilet.

The mother of a six-month-old named Charlotte from Sun Valley, California, had to kick down the door of their bathroom after her two children had locked themselves inside with the older one calling for help.

The mother immediately pulled the baby out of the toilet. She was blue, but slightly breathing, the Los Angeles Daily News reported.

The girl was in a serious condition and recovering after being airlifted to Children's Hospital Los Angeles.

Two police officers were able to "open up her airways and she started to cry, which means she was responsive", LAPD lieutenant Scott Harrelson said.

The mother later told US news channel NBC4 she was a nurse and was also able to perform CPR until police arrived.

She said she wanted other parents to know how quickly the situation developed and that it only took "a few inches of water" for a child to drown.

The woman reportedly told NBC that as soon as she pulled her daughter out she "flew out of mummy mode and into nurse mode", which may have saved her life.

Charlotte has been discharged from the hospital and is recovering at home.
