A bad Santa with a walking stick has raided a safe and stolen cash at a shopping centre in Sydney's southwest.

Police said a man dressed in a full Santa Claus suit entered a retail store at the shopping centre in Liverpool about 8pm on Sunday (10pm, NZ time).

The store was closed at the time, but the shopping centre was open.

The man was pushing a shopping trolley containing a red sack and was using a walking stick, police said.

He broke into the office of the store and forced entry into a safe, stealing a large sum of cash, before leaving.
