A bid to refloat a 50-foot trawler stranded off a beach in Sydney's south has failed with the boat refusing to come off the rocks.

The fishing boat, Challenge, ran onto the rocks off Cronulla  Point early on Tuesday.

Four Indonesian crew members tried to escape the choppy water on  a small boat before marine police rescued them.

A salvage team attached lines to the stern of the vessel last  night in preparation to tow the vessel early today, but a  Sydney Ports spokesman said the boat would stay where it is until  Thursday.

''It very nearly came off in the tide,'' he told AAP.

''It was floating at the front but not at the back. The plan is to lighten the boat, attach an extra tug and try  again tomorrow.''

Authorities will try again on Thursday morning.

Sydney Ports harbour master Phillip Holliday said the boat was in good condition and no fuel had leaked.

Water police and volunteers from the State Emergency Service  guarded the scene overnight to stop swimmers and curious passersby  getting too close.

The Challenge has proven something of a tourist attraction, with  crowds gathering again today.

An investigation continues into why the trawler ran aground.
