Fiordland "character" Murray Gunn has died at the age of 89.

Friends have payed tribute to the former Hollyford identity after he died in a rest home in Oamaru on Friday morning.

Chris Carran, of Te Anau, said Gunn, who lived in Waimate before entering a rest home last month, was a character and had his "own way of doing things".

The Hollyford Museum Charitable Trust, of which Carran is a member, would continue to run Gunn's Camp, he said. Trust secretary Colin Pemberton also described him as a character and a great gatherer of friends.

The Gunn's Camp website says Gunn took over the Hollyford Camp, also known as Gunn's Camp, after his father, Davey, drowned in the Hollyford River in 1955.

Murray Gunn also started a museum commemorating his father's famous exploits and the pioneer settlers at Martins Bay and the road-builders.

The museum burned down in 1990 but volunteers helped rebuild it.

After 51 years in Hollyford, Gunn retired in 2005 and the camp and museum were then run by the trust. nicci.mcdougall@stl.co.nz
