DROWNING SUSPECTED: Arran James Gairns' body was found on Sunday.

A third person has appeared in the Timaru District Court in relation to the alleged robbery of an Ashburton man who was found dead on Saturday.

Supported by family members, the Ashburton man, 26, entered no plea and was remanded in custody today.

The man, who has interim name suppression, was charged with assaulting Arran James Gairns, 34, with intent to rob in Ashburton on Saturday.

He is set to reappear on July 3.

A Wellington woman, 26, and an Ashburton man, 24, appeared in court earlier this week on the same charge.
Another man is still to appear.

Police have said in a statement they believe Mr Gairns was the subject of an attempted robbery which is thought to have occurred prior to 4am on Saturday, May 31.

His body was located in a drainage run-off area behind commercial premises on West Street on Sunday afternoon.

Today police have continued inquiries to locate and speak to persons of interest in relation to events prior to Mr Gairns' death, which is being treated as unexplained.

Some additional forensic examination was carried out yesterday in the wider area near where Mr Gairns' body was found.
