Two people are in a stable condition in Christchurch Hospital after a serious crash which injured seven near Geraldine last night.

Another man from the same vehicle will be transported to Christchurch today, a South Canterbury District Health Board spokeswoman said.

The man was in a satisfactory condition but was being moved for "further treatment''.

The man, and two other occupants in that car, and a mother and daughter in the second vehicle, were taken to Timaru Hospital last night.

No condition updates would be released for those remaining in Timaru Hospital, she said.

The collision happened about 7.30pm on the corner of Coach Rd and Geraldine-Winchester Highway, which was blocked off while emergency services cleared the scene.

Geraldine Volunteer Fire Brigade chief Graeme Mould said one of the patients, a woman, was extricated from one of the vehicles using the jaws of life.

The occupants of one vehicle were of a similar age and were possibly from the North Island, he said.

Two Geraldine fire engines and one from Temuka attended the scene, along with three ambulances.

''It was pretty busy there. The cars were extensively damaged," Mould said.
