Two cars have collided in Timaru, sending one of the vehicles into a block of flats on the corner of Craigie Ave and College Rd.

Constable Jan Gibbs said the vehicle that crashed into the house had been travelling south on Craigie Ave. The driver had tried to turn right on to College Rd but had pulled out into the path of a northbound Ford Escort, Gibbs said.

"He’s come round, straight over in front of them and ended up in the conservatory [of the house]."

The residents were not at home at the time but a woman who lives in the adjoining flat was.

Donna Burns said she was sitting on the couch, next to her neighbour’s conservatory, at the time of the crash.

"I thought a truck had rolled, actually. I could hear glass breaking and I could hear steel moving. I jumped up and ran down the hallway to get out of the way," Burns said.

"I’m just so lucky it didn’t come through my house [and] I’m just so pleased [the neighbours] weren’t home. If they were out there it could have been terrible."

There were four people in the car that crashed into the flat and two in the Ford Escort. No one was injured.

Burns said she went to check everyone was okay but that when she got outside plenty of help had already arrived.

The owner of the damaged flat, who declined to be named, said it was the second time a vehicle had crashed into the  property.

Fire, ambulance and police attended the scene.

Craigie Ave remains open but access to College Rd from Craigie Ave was blocked off while the scene was cleared.
