Shake loose: The final night of Footloose The Musical, presented by Mountainview High School is on at the Mountainview auditorium at 7pm.

Colourful art: Sarah Deans Magical Colours exhibition is on at the York Street Gallery of Fine Art, 21 York Street, Timaru, until Thursday October 9. Open 6 days 11am-3pm, closed on Sundays.

Rock'n'roll: Six-week beginners' course for rock'n'roll at the RSA, 21 Wai-iti Rd, Timaru from 7.30pm-8.30pm on Friday nights. All welcome.

Piano tunes: Tom McGrath performs Bach transcriptions, Schubert, Scriabin, Chopin, Henry Cowell and Anthony Ritchie on the Alexander Piano, the longest piano in the world. A fundraiser to get the piano to Auckland to play with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra at The Shed, 28 Pareora Gorge Rd, 6pm.


Excellent Business: The 2014 South Canterbury Chamber Business Excellence Awards, Caroline Bay Hall, Timaru from 6.30pm.

Dance feet: Timaru Tap & Jazz Dance Festival, Timaru Girls High School hall. Competitors from throughout New Zealand with classes in jazz, tap, hip hop including song and dance, Broadway and much more. On until Sunday.

Remembrance: Alzheimers Memory walk is on. Meet on the corner of Strathallan Street at 10.45am and walk up to the piazza for free entertainment and a sausage sizzle. Help us to raise awareness for those with memory loss.

Festival sounds: St Mary's Music Festival is on at the Craighead Auditorium, Wrights Ave, Timaru. The event starts 1.30pm with piano, going until 5pm, with prizewinners announced after each section (piano duet, composition, instrumental, brass, group and singing). First, second and third placegetters will perform at the evening concert (open to the general public, $5) 6pm-7pm, followed by presentation of prizes.

Sunshine: Observe our Sun, with specialised telescopes from South Canterbury Astronomers group and Geraldine Observatory, at the Village Green Geraldine, 10:30am-2pm.

Starlight: Observe the night sky at Geraldine Observatory. A range of telescopes available, in association with South Canterbury Astronomers Group. On from 7pm-10pm, entry by donation to South Canterbury Astronomers Group.


To market: Station Market, at the Railway Station Timaru, with vegetables, breads, plants and crafts.

In the genes: Family History Month, August: Are you interested in tracing your history? Can we help? Come and and see us, 1.30pm-4.30pm. The South Canterbury Branch of NZSG will have an information desk in the foyer at the South Canterbury Museum and two members will be on hand to help with family history queries.
