Cook Strait ferry strike threat as talks break down
Interislander Cook Strait ferry sailings from Saturday, December 1 to Saturday, December 7 are in doubt after the breakdown of pay talks.
Both the Aviation and Marine Engineers Association (AMEA) and the Merchant Services Guild (MSG) had issued strike notices yesterday, Interislander general manager Thomas Davis said.
The unions and the company - a KiwiRail business unit - had failed to reach an agreement on pay rates after several months of collective agreement negotiations.
The strike would have the effect of suspending all Interislander sailings from December 1 to December 7, Davis said.
"Interislander remains committed to a speedy resolution and will continue to negotiate with both unions with a view to reaching settlement before the strike period begins."
AMEA represented 70 engineering officers and MSG represented 54 deck officers.
