I was all set to spend today's post angrily ranting about the latest series of Castle - but then I noticed a swag of interesting news stories to talk about. So let's go through those instead, one at a time ...
The Office US to end after upcoming Season 9
I read about the end of The Office US yesterday and had this thought: yeah, okay. Doesn't it just seem as though The Office US is about four years past its peak at this point? Even Steve Carell wanted no part of it - and judging by his filmography, he'll do just about anything for money.
Jay Leno takes a pay cut to save a few of his staff's jobs
It's always nice when a celebrity acts selflessly, even in a small and symbolic way - and the truth is that it happens all too scarcely. So, I tip my hat to you, Mr Leno. Nice one.
Game of Thrones S1 will air on Prime, only censored
Prime announced yesterday that Game of Thrones will be airing, free-to-air, in September. However, the show will be edited to get around the BSA. Censoring a show is a pretty common practice: subtle cuts are made to a number of shows before they go free-to-air - True Blood, The Walking Dead and (presumably) the upcoming American Horror Story (starting on Monday on Four) are all slightly cut before going to air.
Sure, censoring the show isn't the best option, but if it means that a brilliant show can be seen by a wider audience, isn't that a good thing? Besides, the good people at Throng played both the censored first episode and the original, side by side, and didn't notice a single cut. Also, the only people really bothered by this have already seen the show because they don't watch FTA at all. Whatever.
If you haven't seen Game of Thrones, I advise you to watch it on Prime - it's a great show, any cuts will probably be near unnoticeable, and it's better to see it with a few seconds cut here and there than not see it at all.
Pop singer Avril Lavigne engaged to Nickelback singer Chad Kroeger
I kinda wish she was marrying someone named Bob so we could collectively call them "Bovril". Instead, we have no easy options. Avrad? Chavril?! My vote goes to "Canada, WTF".
Michael J Fox returning to television, will play a dad with Parkinson's
I'm glad Michael J Fox is coming back to the small screen. He's a class act, impressing in recent guest roles on Curb Your Enthusiasm, Rescue Me and The Good Wife. I'm also excited that his illness will be integrated as part of the show. It would've been a shame to explain Fox's Parkinson's disease as excess caffeine, extreme nervousness, or some other stupid excuse you just know some terrible network executive was dying to use.
Blind woman booted off New Zealand's Got Talent
I'm as anti-prejudice as anyone you'll find, but even I have trouble with this woman's claims: for some reason, she seems to reject the notion that a blind singer could be dismissed from a singing competition because she wasn't one of the best singers in that competition. Why does the discussion jump straight to "the producers are obviously prejudiced against blind people"? Just from an entertainment standpoint, if she were a great singer (and remember, being a great singer doesn't rely on eyesight), having a blind contestant on the show would be a helluva story.
Syphilis spreads in LA porn scene
I'll take "What does the Los Angeles porn scene have in common with Dargaville?" for $50, thanks Alex. (Just kidding, Dargaville. I love you. Not physically, though.)
Auckland Daze, Super City new comedy Short Poppies in latest funding round
A few good shows in the latest round of NZ On Air funding ... but, sadly, no love for my favourite Kiwi comedy in recent years, Hounds. If you'd like to see Hounds given another season, the only way is through a grass roots movement - so make sure you sign this petition and share it with all your friends. Hounds, Season 2: let's make it happen!
Deadliest Catch prize pack winner
Congratulations Andre Baird (#3), you win stuff!

How does Madeleine Sami's show 'Super City' get another round of funding. It's a terribly unfunny show...
So disappointed about Hounds! Such a great show - at last a genuinely funny and original NZ comedy and no second season! The show is still available to watch on demand on the TV3 website. If you have seen it please sign the petition. If you have not seen it go watch it then sign the petition.
Speaking of blind people, the latest season of Masterchef U.S. (hosted by Gordon F***ing Ramsay) has a contestant who is blind! True story.
[Warning: Spoilers]
Christine, for that is her name, has an illness that gradually made her blind, beginning from age 10. She is now completely blind, and cooks by carefully feeling, tasting, and smelling. Arguably this makes her a great chef, because she is better at sensing the flavours.
I couldn't help but check out how well she does - and I discovered that she is in the top four (in the U.S., the season final will air Sept 4th).
So I might actually watch this season, if only to see a blind woman out-cook everyone else (including one guy who is very "I'm great!!!" and just annoys me).
Are you counting the headings as paragraphs? I think calling it 22 paragraphs is pretty sneaky, Chris ;)
Great post Chris - I like to hear the gossip which I never get around to reading.
And I think it's great news about Game of Thrones. I've just started the books and I'll watch the series again just because it's so brilliant (might wait for SoHo though so it's got no ads). Oh and by the way I'm really pleased that I watched the excellent series before the books because it's a pretty damn accurate representation of script and characters and the story is so complicated that having the tv series knowledge makes it even more of a pleasure!
@Ben #5: A sneaky one for The Simpsons fans - the headline comes from a Simpsons episode titled "22 Short Films About Springfield" (of which there were considerably less than 22) :)
I thought all along GoT would be cut for free-to-air. There is one scene though that I think will have to be cut in its entirety - Littlefinger explaining his motivations while 2 prostitutes cavort in the background. Its a critical scene as its the first time we find out what in going on in Littlefinger's head, but its going to be near on impossible to edit.
Also very interested that American Horror Story will be on here. I can only think of one scene that might need editing down and its not that critical. But am I imagining that it is being publicised as "from the makers of Glee"?
That blind person has probably been raised with people making allowances for her disability, so thinks she should stay in because of this. Get over yourself. Blind or not, if you dont meet the standard the judges are looking for, this competition is not for you.
I realise I am in the minority here, but I have never liked Michael J Fox as an actor, or shows that he has been in. I think it's interesting that he's got someone to write his disease into a role for him to play, and I wish him well, but I wont be watching.
Avril Lavinge and Chad Kroeger - big LOL there!!
Game of Thrones needed censoring, there is so much gratuitous nudity and sex shown, which doesn't add to the programme at all - especially Emillia Clarke's character. Almost put me off the whole series when I saw the first episode uncensored. Hope Prime screen season 2 as well!

I would rant passionately about Game of Thrones being edited, but I've seen the show unedited already, as will most people who are *really* that excited about the series :-). So I'll spare you the ranting.
Definitely glad to see Michael J returning to the screen, he definitely has always struck me as being a class act, and certainly he has done a huge amount for Parkinson's (fundraising, publicity, mainstream profile). Good to see that somebody in front of the camera try to make a difference in something other than their pay packet. Wouldn't it be nice if some networks were 1/100th as good like that ...
