Yothu Yindi singer Mandawuy Yunupingu has been rushed to hospital after collapsing at his home in Arnhem Land.

The former Australian of the Year, who was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame last week, has been battling end stage renal disease.

Yunupingu, 56, was flown to Royal Darwin Hospital on Wednesday where he is responding to treatment, reports the ABC.Former band manager Alan James said the singer should be able to leave hospital in the next four to five days.

''I can only surmise that all of the exertion of the last week and all the excitement was a bit too much,'' he told ABC.''

He did have to do dialysis in Sydney last week, on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.''

I guess we are just hoping that he didn't pick up anything  nasty in the Sydney hospital.

''Yothu Yindi are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their  international hit Treaty and performed the song with Peter Garrett, Paul Kelly, Jessica Mauboy and Dan Sultan at last week's ARIA Awards.
