Coronation Street star Michael Le Vell, who plays Kevin Webster, has been charged with child sex offences allegedly carried out over a 10-year period.

British ITV News reported Le Vell would appear in Manchester Magistrates Court facing 19 child sex offences, including rape and indecent assault.

Le Vell, a father of two whose real name is Michael Turner, was arrested in 2011 on suspicion of committing child sex offences but the charges were dropped three months later.

According to the Daily Mail, authorities said at the time, there was not enough evidence to charge him

The actor said he was 'delighted' to have been 'completely exonerated', thanked police for their 'thorough' investigation and Coronation Street staff and the public for their support.

He vowed then to put the allegations behind him and returned to the show after a short break.

He is currently involved in some of the soap's main storylines.

But crown prosecutors now believe they have enough evidence to proceed with charges for offences committed as far back as 2001.

Alison Levitt, QC, principal legal advisor to the director of public prosecutions, advised charges should be pressed, ITV reported.

"I have very carefully reviewed the evidence in this case and I have concluded that there is sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest to charge Michael Robert Turner with a number of sexual offences," she said.

"I have authorised Greater Manchester Police to charge Mr Turner with 19 offences, including rape of a child."

Greater Manchester Police said the charges related to offences allegedly carried out against a child between 2001 and 2010, ITV reported.

Le Vell, who lives in Hale, Cheshire, has been in the soap since 1983.

The actor split from his wife Janette Beverley last year.

He is due to appear in court February 27.
