Summer Heights High and Angry Boys star Chris Lilley has started work on a new comedy series for Australian TV.

The six-part half-hour comedy series will air later this year on ABC1 in Australia, and is being produced by Princess Pictures and Lilley, the same team that also made We Can Be Heroes, Summer Heights High and Angry Boys.

The yet-to-be-named series is a co-production between the ABC Australia and HBO in the US with a pre-sale to BBC Three in the UK.

Lilley's three previous series have sold more than a million DVDs internationally, and have been broadcast on networks on every continent.

It will be Lilley's first major television production since Angry Boys, which aired in mid-2011.

"I've never been more excited about shooting a show," Lilley said in a statement.

"I really like this one. Can't wait for fans to see it."

Lilley won the Graham Kennedy Award for Most Outstanding New Talent at the 2006 Logies for We Can Be Heroes, which aired in 2005.

Two years later at the Logies he received the Most Popular Actor award for his role in Summer Heights High, which was also named Most Outstanding Comedy.
