Ryan Gosling says a New Zealand woman making dishcloths with his face on them could be a sign the Mayans were actually right about the world ending.

When it was presented to him during an interview, Gosling could not even make eye contact with the towel, saying: "it's like looking at the sun...I can't stare directly at it".

The woman behind the towels, Colleen "Dear Colleen" Pugh, said she never dreamed it would end up in his hands.

"I had no idea it was going to happen but do remember sending an order to Hollywood and thinking how funny and wondered if it was going to someone who knew him," she said.

Pugh said she came up with the idea of "Dishes I'd Rather Be Doing" a couple of years ago.

"I chose to do a Ryan Gosling design because he has captured the imaginations of women around the world plus he's easy on the eye, as well as being great actor."

The cloth features three images of Gosling's face - one "classic Gosling", one as "Gosling the hipster", and one as "the charmer".

She made another collection of towels featuring the All Blacks, to celebrate winning the Rugby World Cup.

The collection, which features Sonny Bill Wiliams, Richie McCaw, and Dan Carter, is held at Te Papa.

Pugh is a Masters graduate from Edinburgh College of Art and is trained as a graphic designer.
