OPINION: February is National BikeWise month and South Cantabrians are being invited to experience the joys of life in the cycle lane.

BikeWise is New Zealand's national cycling programme, promoting cycling as an enjoyable, fun, healthy and safe transport mode.

You don't have to be a hardened pro or own any special gear, just dust off your bike, grab a helmet, round up the kids, and come along.

Timaru Cycling Club FUN race night will be held on Wednesday, February 5 at the Levels Raceway.

This is a great opportunity to race your bike around the car racing track in a fun environment.

All bikes and all ages welcome. Meet at 6.15pm at Levels Raceway.

Go By Bike Day on Wednesday, February 12 is the one day of the year when thousands of Kiwis all over the country join together, rain or shine, and cycle to work, school, or wherever they are headed.

It is the perfect opportunity to either give cycling a go or rekindle that relationship with your bike!

Register your workplace or education setting with Stacey.

Ride to the Bay will be held on Sunday, February 16 starting at Claremont Road entrance to Scenic Reserve at 9.30am.

It is an easy family fun ride of approximately 14km through the Scenic Reserve to Caroline Bay, pick ups along the way.

Older children and more skilled riders may choose to have a go at the more challenging tracks through the Scenic Reserve with guidance from experienced riders.

Easy Riders Group Ride on Wednesday, February 19 is a casual ride through the Scenic Reserve targeted at older people.

Meet at the lake carpark in the Scenic Reserve 9.30am.

Kids Can Do It Tryathlon will be held again at the CBAY Outdoor Pool with registrations starting at 11.30am on Sunday, February 23.

Aimed at children aged from seven to 13 years old.

South Canterbury Mountain Bike Club Ride is a casual ride around a circuit of tracks and is an opportunity to practise for race situations or improve riding techniques by riding with other experienced riders at your own pace.

Meet at the Church St entrance to the Scenic Reserve on Monday, February 24 at 6.30pm.

Cycling is good for the pocket! No more parking meters or petrol pumps.

A third of vehicle trips in New Zealand are over distances of less than five kilometres - easily covered by bike.
