Palace fit for a prince The long and the short of it Teens need chance to build social skills Crazy gags, chuckles in comedy They must be mad to show this Belated justice - but not for crew Picture worth a thousand words Tense situations can increase the volume Middle-class guilt trip changes nothing Non-stop drama, especially on Sundays

Long-time readers of the Timaru Herald will recognise the cartoons on today's Past Times page.

Created by Timaru man Allan Hawkey - aka Hawkeye - they were a regular feature in the Herald in the 1980s.

Hawkey was a senior manager with the ANZ Bank in Timaru when he offered the Herald the first cartoon, starting an association lasting a number of transfers and 10 years. This selection, from an envelope marked '1989' gives a taste of the topics of the time.
