SPEED CONTROL: Portable speed humps are being used to slow traffic at road works south of Timaru.

SPOOKED: Nasty surprises await those brave enough to enter the Maize Maze at Studholme tonight. The maze is the work of farmer Rory Foley and Jess Fargher, who have converted 1.4 hectares into a series of baffling twists and turns.

LUNAR LARGESSE: The moon looked unusually large as it rose over Timaru just after 9pm last night [February 28, 2013].

CHOPPING CHERRIES: Three Twizel Area School pupils, from left, Nick Preston-Marshall, Wayjo Rapana-King and Liam Stewart (crouching) volunteered to help the Department of Conservation last week with a cherry tree work day at Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park. On arrival at Mt Cook, the pupils were briefed on how to go about removing the young seedlings, which involved learning about using secateurs and herbicide and the safety aspects associated with this.
