Twizel turning on the birthday festivities

20:24, May 18 2014

Twizel is inviting all past, present, and holiday residents to celebrate two of the town's anniversaries over Queens' Birthday Weekend from May 31 to June 2.

Forty-five years ago the first sod was turned to build the Ministry of Works village to house employees of the hydro electric scheme and it is 30 years since it officially became a town in its own right.

The Twizel Promotion and Development Association (TPDA) vice chairman Shaun Norman said there was not a lot of interest in registering for organised events so it had been adjusted to a family day. "No registration is required we just hope to attract more people than would normally be here over that weekend."

He said it was the date many people came to drain their water supply in their holiday homes and took the boat home for winter.

Organisers will point visitors in the direction of various activities including art and craft exhibitions, helicopter and biplane flights, sporting events, cycleways and walks as well as the wonderful scenery.
