NEW HOME: Alex, 5, Vincent and Mao Lin, immigrants from Taiwan, are proud to call Waimate home.

Vincent Lin loves the Waimate District - a place he now calls home.

The Taiwanese man has moved to the district with his wife, Mao, and 5-year-old son, Alex. They are the proud new proprietors of the Glenavy Store, which they took ownership of three weeks ago.

In that time, they have become well aware of the various nationalities who also call the Waimate District home.

Lin said other immigrants, particularly those working in the dairy industry, were among his customers.

"We've got a dairy factory here so there's a lot of workers from [around the world]. They come into our shop to buy stuff so I've met with them."

He said they all appeared quite happy living in the district.

Lin first visited New Zealand 10 years ago to study in Hamilton.

"After I finished my study, I just [went] back to Taiwan and China."

However, the temptation to return to New Zealand was too great so the family decided to settle in the Waimate District, where Lin has been enjoying better work-life balance.

"We've got a very friendly community and a very nice neighbourhood. It's a perfect location for everything," he said.

The only downfall was the lack of health services in Glenavy. "We are quite short of a clinic and hospital. If my son gets sick, I will have to drive into Oamaru, 15 to 20 kilometres away."

That aside, the Lins are enjoying their new Kiwi way of life.
