Calm chill forecast to follow high wind
Weather warnings of severe gales exceeding 120kmh were in place last night for the Canterbury region, but today the weather is expected to be calmer and colder.
"The rain should clear. It will be colder but fine with a southwesterly change today and the wind will ease later in the evening," meteorologist David Miller said.
"The maximum today will be 8 degrees Celsius with a minimum of minus 4C overnight. Tekapo experienced most of the rain and a lot of the gale-force winds yesterday [Saturday] but should currently be in the same boat as Timaru."
Earth and Sky observatory employee Martina McAuley said: "We experienced heavy rain and strong winds and warnings for snow were put into place, but it did not happen.
"Today the wind is expected to drop."
Tomorrow, according to MetService, Timaru is expected to have an encore in terms of weather, with a maximum of 10C and a minimum of 0C, with a southwesterly peaking at 85kmh.
