Sheep dog trials off to fine start
The South Island and New Zealand Sheep Dog Trials are well under way in Geraldine.
The trials, which are being held at Waihi Station, started on Monday.
Event secretary Sally Mallinson said they were halfway through the Huntaway sections already, thanks to the sun shining yesterday.
"Stock go a bit better when they have got sun shining on their backs," she said.
Registrations opened on Sunday, with at least half of the entrants from the North Island.
Organisers were not initially hopeful the wet weather would ease for a good week of competitions. However, yesterday's hardy frost was warmly welcomed as it meant a good day ahead.
